The Australian Dream

This post was inspired by a guy who tried to buy my love with new boots and jewellery (I know, tempting) and another (Australian) friend who told me that his main goal in life is to increase wealth. If you recognize yourself, shame on you.
The cons of big city life. People tend to be really superficial and materialistic and their lives spin around money. The first thing that people ask each other is what they do for a living, how much they earn, what kind of car they drive and whether they own a house. They believe that worldly possessions lead to a better life. Somehow expressions of success and status seem overly important here. To me, those things are secondary. There are so much more important aspects to a person. Home, car and boat ownership is the Australian love affair.
This is, even though there is lots of debate about the environmental sustainability of the suburban lifestyle here. The new luxury apartments in the Melbourne Docklands are half empty because people rather live in their own house in the suburbs than on top of each other.
It doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate the high standard of living that you get with money. I mean, YOU KNOW ME. I want to be able to pay my bills without any stress and buy shoes and clothes and travel. But that is not the most important thing. And, even if I had all the money in the world I would have no need whatsoever to show it off to other people. Money and material things don’t make anybody happy. It might make your miserable life a bit more comfortable, but in the end, happiness is in between your ears, inside your head.
As you know, I’m an ambitious and achievement-oriented person to a certain level, but it’s not all about money (as one of my best friends would say). I think it is more important to pursue the things that you love doing and do it as well as you can. And maybe sometimes, the money will follow… ;)
---Go out in the world and work like money doesn't matter, Sing as if no one is listening, Love as if you have never been hurt, and Dance as if no one is watching.---
